Day three...

Day three was just ok. Mark was very excited all day to see Grandma and Papa who were coming in late afternoon to babysit while Shawn and I went to Marks pre school orientation. I think his excitement caught up wit him which led to no nap and not great eating.

Food: For breakfast he had turkey sausage (by now you may have guessed he loves:), blueberries and yogurt. He did eat everything for breakfast. For lunch I made him gluten free chicken fingers and cauliflower and a cheese stick. He barely touched anything. I tried to make a game out of it but he had no interest. At dinner we had pork tenderloin, green bean salad and broccoli. He did well at dinner and ate a good amount.

Sleep. Last night he woke up around 12:45 to go to the bathroom. He went right back to bed so my thoughts are he shouldn't have gone to bed after drinking so much milk. Lesson leaned ;). He was up at six this morning again but crawled into bed with me and went back to sleep until 7. No nap today.

Behavior. He ha a few moments today when he was a bit too rough with the twins but overall he did well. He wanted to help change diapers and was generally very sweet.

I spent some time today searching blogs for gluten free recipes and general advice. If any of you out there know of any pass them along please! ;)

Day two...

Today went really well!!  I felt like I saw some positive changes in him.  He smiled and laughed a lot today and I realized I haven't seen that side of him in awhile...which then made me sad that my happy guy had not been happy. So here is the low down :)

Sleep:  He slept through the night!!!  Yay :).  He was up at 6am which I hated but he did sleep all night long.  I'm praying that it's related to the diet and not just a fluke but I guess only time will tell.  It took awhile to get him to nap today...he was yawning a lot but just wanted to play.  He finally fell asleep for about an hour and a half so I was pleased with that.  He went up to bed around 8 tonight and it took him awhile but by 8:30 he was out.  Cross your fingers for another peaceful night.

Food:  For breakfast this morning he had his turkey sausage, yogurt and blueberries.  He ate everything once again which is amazing to me.  He usually just picks at his food and I have to argue with him to eat the smallest amounts.  I LOVE that he's eating.   For lunch he had a turkey hot dog, green beans and a cheese stick...again he cleared his plate.   This afternoon he had some fruit snacks and he wanted marshmallows (who was I to deny my guy who's been eating so well:).   At dinner he ate pulled pork, mashed potatoes and broccoli (and ate it all).

I should note that he told me his tummy feels better today...umprompted and his legs are looking a little bit better today.  I asked him if they were itchy....he said no...I didn't notice him itching at all today.  I should also mention about a week ago we noticed that he has started stuttering.  Not sure if it's related or not.  He was put on some allergy medicine not too long ago and my fear was that it was making him over excited so we stopped that last Thursday.  It does seem to be improving.

Gluten free...day one

I guess I should start with a little background of how we arrived at this point.  Ever since Mark was an infant he constantly had eczema patches on his legs and thick patches on his head.   I pointed them out to the pediatrician and was reassured that he would outgrow it and not to worry.  So we loaded him up with Aquaphor and gave him oatmeal baths and waited for him to outgrow it.  Around two years old he started waking up during the night.  He would cry and cry at his door and eventually sleep on the floor up against the door.  We thought that it was (again) another phase he would outgrow.  I tried everything I could think of.  He had an incentive chart, earned small prizes for sleeping in bed and other rewards.  We took him back to the doctor and tried to figure out why he wasn't sleeping.  We were sent to the ENT who sent us for a sleep study.  The only result of the sleep study was that he snored and his tonsils were a little larger than they should be.  SO this past July his tonsils and adenoids came out.  Thankfully he came through it like a champ and didn't even have a day down.  We had such high hopes for things looking up after this surgery.  His weight has always been so low and the dark circles under his eyes on some days are unnerving.  Needless to say the surgery did nothing....well he doesn't snore anymore.  We got him a big boy bed which helped him to actually stay in bed so he doesn't sleep on the floor anymore.  The eczema is awful and getting worse and worse...he itches so badly during the night he breaks the skin.  He doesn't sleep through the night and when he does he doesn't sleep well...his behavior during the day is so tough to take because he's so tired....he is too rough with Audrey and Aiden and I worry for his relationships with them as they get older.  The past week Shawn and I have been talking and googling and have come across a lot about gluten free allergies.  It all seems to fit.  I could be wrong....but it's worth a shot.  We have an appt with an allergist Sept 27th so I've decided over the next month to try this and give it our best shot.  I hate watching my guy suffer when there is such a smart, caring little boy inside.  I need to help him find his way out.  So I'm going to document our journey until we figure this out.  I'll post what he eats during the day, his sleep habits and changes in behavior.

Day One:

Food:  For breakfast he had turkey sausages, a cheese stick and a gluten free waffle.  He seemed happy with breakfast and ate it all up.  Usually he doesn't finish all of his breakfast so I was happy to see that he was full.  At lunch he had a turkey burger, green beans and a cheese stick.  Once again he ate a ton.  He was happy and I didn't have to argue with him to eat his meal.  After he took a nap he had a few gluten free chocolate chips cookies that I had found at Meijer (which has a fantastic gluten free section by the way) and carrot sticks while the twins had teddy grahams.  For dinner we had fish tacos, rice and guacamole and tortilla chips.  I bought gluten free tortillas...honestly I wasn't the biggest fan of them but I think they will grow on me.  He ate a good amount of dinner and was somewhat better behaved at the table.

Behavior:  His behavior was challenging today (like usual).  When he's on his own playing he's very sweet but playing with the twins he's rough and unkind to them at times.  He found himself in quite a few times outs today and there were lots of tears.  I'm praying this improves as the days go on for all of our sakes.

Sleep Habits:  Well since this is the first entry I can't talk much about sleep.  I will say last night he was up at 12.  His routine is usually him getting up around 12 or around 3 to go to the bathroom.  He wakes up crying loudly and stands in the hallway.  We've talked to him countless time about going to the bathroom and getting back into bed...but he doesn't.  He napped well today.  Im hoping tonight is uneventful.

Raggedy Ann and Andy Birthday!

Well it's been a week since I updated...I think it took me that long to recover! lol.  The party was a great success.  The twins had so much fun.  Everything worked out really well.  The decorations came together exactly like I wanted them to.  I was so nervous about how it would all look since I had to make everything.  It was almost impossible to find anything that was pre made for Raggedy Ann and Andy but I think I did well with what I could find :).  The cakes were great and turned out exactly how I envisioned them!  I was so happy that I had found the last minute idea of the making raggedy ann and andy faces!  The kids really loved the activity and it kept them busy between eating and the cake.  It was a perfect day :)

Dog days of summer are here

It's finally August and it's HOT!!  I've been busy prepping for the twins first birthday party and getting our August dinner menu all set.  I love the beginning of a month...it always feels like a fresh start...almost a mini new years :)   I finally got our menu together and I "think" I have all of the birthday prep done.  I can't believe the kids are going to be one!!!  Today I decorated countless cookies...which turned out pretty cute if I do say so myself....and baked all of the cakes.  Tomorrow is cake decorating!!  Im so excited for Sunday.  There is just something about first birthday's that seem magical.  I can't wait to see their faces and watch them dive into their first cake :).
